We’ve just released Ultimaker Cura 3.6 for Windows, MacOS, and Linux. As you may have heard, we recently established alliances with leading material manufacturers, so we have enhanced our software with a convenient way to manage plugins and material profiles — the Marketplace.

Use the Marketplace to download an ever-evolving range of 3D printing material profiles from leading material manufacturers, such as BASF, DuPont, DSM, Clariant, and Owens Corning. Each profile is configured and tested by their experts to work seamlessly with Ultimaker hardware. Combine these powerful material profiles with the new print core CC Red 0.6 for the Ultimaker S5, and push the boundaries of your applications by 3D printing with advanced technical plastics, composites, flame-retardant, and ESD-safe materials.

On top of this, we have added a new infill type: gyroid infill, plus a range of other new features and stability enhancements. Take your 3D printing operation to the next level and download the latest version of our 3D printing software today.

An enhanced slicing engine

Gyroid infill. This new infill pattern alternates with every layer to provide equal distribution of strength in every direction, and keeps print duration and material use to a minimum. A fully-connected part interior makes it possible to use a single drainage hole when dissolving water-soluble support material, or to fill empty spaces with a reinforcing material, such as epoxy resin. You can find gyroid infill in Custom mode, in the ‘Infill pattern’ dropdown menu.

Support brim. When using support material, you can now generate a brim within the support infill regions of the first layer. Unlike a regular brim with build material, a support brim is printed underneath the support. With this new setting, you can significantly increase the adhesion of your supports to the build plate, making your prints more reliable.

Refactored settings. We’ve made structural changes under the hood of the application for a more testable, future-proof way of storing and representing settings. These improvements should improve slicing speed, and make development more streamlined in the future.

Print core CC Red 0.6. Our new print core — the CC Red 0.6 — is now selectable when the Ultimaker S5 profile is active. This powerful new print core is optimized for use with abrasive materials and composites, and opens up a range of industrial applications.

A better user experience

Marketplace. The Marketplace is a quick, convenient way for you to add extra functionality to Ultimaker Cura. Streamline your iterative design workflow with plugins, and download material profiles configured and optimized by respected manufacturers, such as BASF, DuPont, Owens Corning, DSM, and Clariant. Get a high print success rate by leveraging the power of material profiles that use the ideal print settings for advanced engineering materials. Access the Marketplace in the menu bar and use tabs to switch between plugins and material profiles. As time goes on, more expert-tested material profiles and plugins that streamline your processes will become available for you to download through this platform.

Firmware checker. We have improved and tested the firmware update checker code for more reliable update notifications, and updated it to include the Ultimaker S5, so that you can get the latest firmware and Cura Connect features more easily.

Toggle fullscreen mode. It’s now easier to use fullscreen mode — conveniently toggle using keyboard shortcuts: Command + Control + F (MacOS), or F11 (Windows and Linux). If you prefer to use the mouse, click the new option in the View menu.

Configuration error message. We have fixed some error messages for more clarity. Previous versions of Ultimaker Cura displayed an error dialog explaining when something affected user configuration files, including the option to reset to factory defaults, but this would not warn about losing the current printer and print profile settings. This has been made more clear to prevent any tragedies.

Increased support for third-party printers

Cooling fan number. If your printer has multiple fans, you can now specify the cooling fan to use. Find this new setting in Machine settings in the Extruder tab.

Filename and layer display. We’ve added M117 commands to the GCODE generator that enable real-time information about the print job file name and layer number. Useful if your printer has a display.

New third-party definitions. We now support more third-party printers out of the box. New profiles have been contributed for Anycube 4MAx and Tizyx K25.

Ender-3. Adjusted printer definitions to the correct size of 235 x 235 mm, with a corrected the start-up sequence, and improved printhead position when prints are purged or completed.

More stability with every release

In this release we have fixed bugs with MacOS compatibility, memory leaks in the Monitor page, reduced the chance of your print head colliding with printed parts, fixed engine crashes when using Tree support, straightened out issues with the layer view display, and much more. See the release notes for a full review.
