Inside Ultimaker: Meet Marcel Buter

Every company needs an R&D guru. We’re fortunate enough to have Marcel – who is responsible for all legislation, not to mention quality management-related matters.

Marcel sets up all necessary schemes to ensure we’re compliant with all international legislation and standardization regulations. As you can imagine, that’s no mean feat! But that isn’t all. He’s also firmly focused on the future, and constantly seeking ways that Ultimaker can improve in terms of compliance, quality, and sustainability.

Before Ultimaker

Before he joined our team, Marcel had 25 years of experience in the business. During this time, he’s taken on many roles: engineering, consultancy, and of course, quality and compliance. Previously, he worked within the medical industry – so he knows how useful our products are for healthcare development.

An Average Day

There’s no such thing as an average day for Marcel, but here are just a few of the jobs he undertakes on a regular basis. You’ll often find him getting in touch with new compliance agencies in other countries – gathering permits to enter the country with our products, or arranging for testing against a well-known standard. This is vital, as it means we can grow globally.

He also has to work with all kinds of customs regulations and holds regular training sessions for Ultimaker’s staff, to make sure they understand compliance. The company has experienced steep growth in the last couple of years, which has really kept Marcel on his toes – and he often has to attend to urgent matters concerning product and trade regulations. Thanks to his amazing efforts, we’re allowed to mark our 3D printers with the MET logo, to show we comply with the all-important 60950 safety standard.

Out of work

It’s fair to say Marcel’s every bit as active outside the office as he is at work! When he’s not at his desk, you’ll find him sailing, snowboarding and fighting (does he ever sit still?). He’s a big foodie and loves healthy, organic snacks. Spending time with his friends is also high on his list of life’s pleasures.
