There are many ways to do this, depending on the type of part, materials used, and many other factors. Here are a few tips on how to best prepare your print job files using <a href=\"https:\/\/web-staging.ultimaker.com\/software\/ultimaker-cura\">Ultimaker Cura<\/a> \u2013 ensuring you will have the best shot at success.<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"article-image article-image--2-1 article-content__image\"><div class=\"article-image__container article-image__container--2-1\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"cura-webinar-\" class=\"img--contain image-contain c-image-contain article-image__image animation-fade-in animation-duration-250ms image-contain--loaded ls-is-cached lazyloaded\" src=\"https:\/\/storage.googleapis.com\/contentful_assets\/images.ctfassets.net\/7cnpidfipnrw\/7qJvsg0isXwpiBFzl1oYR\/c9d34a080547ed1eaa738e22bf61a68a\/cura-webinar-\"><\/div><\/div>\n<section class=\"article-text\"><p>When using Ultimaker Cura, your models are &#8220;sliced&#8221; into horizontal layers and transformed into\u202ffiles\u202fthat\u202fyour printer can understand.  <\/p>\n<p>Ultimaker Cura\u2019s Preview mode will show you what the layers look like and how they will be printed.\u202f\u202f <\/p>\n<h2>Preview mode <\/h2>\n<p>Preview\u202fmode\u202fhas two views \u2013 X-ray and Layer view <br>\u202f<br><b>X-ray\u202fview.<\/b> With\u202fX-ray\u202fview, you don\u2019t need to slice your model yet.\u202fJust load the model, go to the \u201cPreview\u201d tab and switch to\u202f\u201cX-ray view.\u201d This is useful to check, as you are able to quickly tell if your design is broken or not watertight. Missing surfaces will be drawn in red in\u202fX-ray\u202fview.\u202fIf you try to slice it, but your design is broken, Ultimaker Cura will not be able to generate layers for it, resulting in missing layers.\u202f\u202fShould this occur, you can repair your model using tools like\u202fMeshmixer\u202for\u202fNetfabb.\u202f <\/p>\n<p><b>Layer view. <\/b>Layer view will give you four color\u202fschemes, each with a purpose: <\/p>\n<ul><li><p>Speed shows you the\u202ffeed rate\u202f\u202f <\/p><\/li>\n<li><p>Layer Thickness\u202fshows you the\u202flayers\u202fand differentiates\u202fby\u202fthickness.\u202fThis is useful when you have the\u202f\u201cAdaptive\u202fLayers\u201d\u202fsetting enabled.\u202f\u202f\u202f <\/p><\/li>\n<li><p>Material Color shows you the layers in colors, depending on material type.\u202f <\/p><\/li>\n<li><p>Line Type is the best option when you want to better see the parts of your model <\/p><\/li><\/ul>\n<h3>More about Line Type<\/h3>\n<p>Line Type is especially useful, as it shows detailed information about specific parts of your print. <\/p>\n<p><b>Helpers<\/b>\u202f(in cyan)\u202fare\u202fcommonly\u202fprinted\u202fwith your support material,\u202fbut are not part of your model. These helpers are printed parts that you will not see in Solid View.\u202f\u202fRather,\u202fhelpers\u202fexist to ensure the quality of your printed model. They are the following:  <\/p>\n<ul><li><p><b>Support structures<\/b> \u2013 so your overhangs will not fall  <\/p><\/li>\n<li><p><b>Build plate adhesion<\/b>\u202f\u2013\u202fthe skirt, the brim, raft \u2013\u202fso your models stick better\u202fto the\u202fbuild plate\u202f <\/p><\/li>\n<li><p><b>Prime towers<\/b>\u202f\u2013 structure typically placed at the back of the build plate so that the nozzle can wipe the oozing material. This helps prevent stringing when switching nozzles  <\/p><\/li><\/ul>\n<p><b>Shell\u202f<\/b>(in red)\u202frepresents only the vertical outer wall of your model. Do not confuse this with top or bottom surface, or the skin.\u202fThe\u202fgreen wall\u202fis the inner wall. Inner walls go between\u202fskin or infill\u202fthe inner parts of the model and the outer wall.\u202fThe outer wall will always be present, although this may not be the case for the inner wall. <br><br><b>Top\/Bottom<\/b>\u202f(in yellow) represents the skin \u2013 the horizontal parts of the model\u202fincluding the top-most parts and the bottom-most parts.  <\/p>\n<p><b>Infill<\/b> (in orange) shows how your model is filled. Ultimaker Cura has different distinct infill patterns. You can also modify their density.<\/p><\/section>\n<div class=\"article-image article-image--2-1 article-content__image\"><div class=\"article-image__container article-image__container--2-1\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"grid-infill-pattern-cura-webinar\" class=\"img--contain image-contain lazyload c-image-contain article-image__image\" src=\"https:\/\/storage.googleapis.com\/contentful_assets\/images.ctfassets.net\/7cnpidfipnrw\/3FW9NpHP4pRCaSKZSHmmuw\/12003a6969983cf7989ad7e93e3a221d\/grid-infill-pattern-cura-webinar\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"article-image__caption\">Different grid infill patterns available in Ultimaker Cura<\/div><\/div>\n<section class=\"article-text\"><p><b>Travel\u202fmoves<\/b> (in lilac and blue) When printing,\u202fwe\u202foften use this view to show us where the nozzles would be travelling to. You can see Z-seam\u202for you can use this to optimize your travel moves.\u202fBlue lines are regular travel moves, while\u202flilac lines represent\u202fa travel move\u202fwith material retraction. This prevents a lot of oozing\u202fwhen the nozzles\u202ftravel\u202fon your printed parts. <br><br>In Preview mode, Ultimaker Cura also has Simulation view. This essentially shows how your nozzle travels \u2013\u00a0you can even see it moving! <\/p>\n<h2>Dual extrusion<\/h2>\n<p>Ultimaker Cura also allows you\u202fto\u202fchoose an extruder to print certain parts of your models. In the below image, the model is printed with extruder 1\u2019s red PLA, but we modified the outer wall extruder to use nylon \u2013 seen here in white.<\/p><\/section>\n<div class=\"article-image article-image--2-1 article-content__image\"><div class=\"article-image__container article-image__container--2-1\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"can-pusher-cura-webinar-\" class=\"img--contain image-contain lazyload c-image-contain article-image__image\" src=\"https:\/\/storage.googleapis.com\/contentful_assets\/images.ctfassets.net\/7cnpidfipnrw\/7uDTrygWbDO2hg5Q7x3OED\/873ab31b6020880364283f2f4c8c3195\/can-pusher-cura-webinar-\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"article-image__caption\">A 3D printed part designed to alert the user to wear <\/div><\/div>\n<section class=\"article-text\"><p>This model was created to push cans off of a conveyor belt.\u202fThe outer wall\u202fwill be printed with the color white. This lets you put support yourself on areas you need, instead of having Ultimaker Cura automatically generate it.\u202fIt is best practice to use support when your overhang angle is 45\u00b0 or lower.  <\/p>\n<p><b>Support blockers.<\/b> Prevents support from being generated on the area where it overlaps with the model. This can be useful on areas in which Ultimaker Cura has generated support, but that don\u2019t necessarily need it.  <\/p>\n<p><b>Mesh settings modifier.<\/b> Modifies the settings of the overlapping area. This is particularly useful in different ways.
