Corrosive chemicals can\u2019t permeate their surface or cause degradation, making them ideal for industrial or end-use parts. There are several different chemical-resistant materials to choose from, each with specific benefits.<\/p><\/div>\n<section class=\"article-text\"><h2>Why is chemical resistance important?<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cChemical resistance\u201d means that <a href=\"https:\/\/web-staging.ultimaker.com\/learn\/what-filaments-can-be-used-for-3d-printing\">materials<\/a> can fulfil their function, even in harsh working environments. Chemical-resistant materials don\u2019t require surface treatment; they are able to withstand exposure to chemicals such as bases, solvents, and acids.  <br><br>Without chemical-resistance, a material may erode, soften, or become misshapen. This is due to the chemical\u2019s molecules diffusing within the material and pushing the polymer chains apart. When this happens, it reduces functionality, and may damage other surrounding parts.<\/p>\n<h2>Common uses of chemical-resistant materials <\/h2>\n<p>Chemical-resistant materials play an important role in packaging applications, particularly in the packaging of cleaning agents, reagents, and other chemicals. They\u2019re also useful for manufacturing tooling. During use, jigs and fixtures are often exposed to chemicals (liquid, gas or solid). Chemical resistance ensures they don\u2019t degrade over time.<\/p><\/section>\n<div class=\"article-image article-image--2-1 article-content__image\"><div class=\"article-image__container article-image__container--2-1\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"chemical-resistant-automotive\" class=\"img--contain image-contain lazyload c-image-contain article-image__image\" src=\"https:\/\/storage.googleapis.com\/contentful_assets\/images.ctfassets.net\/7cnpidfipnrw\/21Iu7fjryWT1xZlUrgbLYp\/6b268e8d4888915b2299cd30e1fdb775\/chemical-resistant-automotive\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"article-image__caption\">Some automotive parts are created using chemical-resistant materials<\/div><\/div>\n<section class=\"article-text\"><p>Many industries require end-use parts to be chemically resistant. Automotive parts, for example, are often exposed to oil or chemicals used for cleaning or maintenance. When created with chemical-resistant material, exposure to even harsh chemicals isn\u2019t a problem.  <\/p>\n<h2>What else should you know? <\/h2>\n<h3>The main factors that influence a polymer\u2019s chemical resistance <\/h3>\n<p>A material\u2019s chemical resistance is impacted by several different factors. These include:  <\/p>\n<ul><li><p>the molecular structure of the polymer <\/p><\/li>\n<li><p>the time of exposure to a chemical <\/p><\/li>\n<li><p>the temperature at the time of exposure <\/p><\/li>\n<li><p>the nature of the chemical <\/p><\/li>\n<li><p>the stress applied to the material  <\/p><\/li><\/ul>\n<h3>Chemical resistance depends on the application<b> <\/b><\/h3>\n<p>Materials are usually only resistant to certain types of chemical. For example, Nylon isn\u2019t adversely affected by acetone, but can be damaged by water. Conversely, PETG isn\u2019t affected by water, but acetone will degrade it. Every material has different properties, and it\u2019s vital to choose the right one for the job.  <\/p>\n<h3>Materials with good chemical resistance<\/h3>\n<p>Several materials have excellent chemical resistance, such as PP, PVDF, and Nylon. PETG is unaffected by water-based chemicals, and (like CPE and CPE+) has good resistance against common chemicals such as alcohol and weak acids.<\/p><\/section>\n<section class=\"article-table\"><table><thead><tr><th><\/th>\n<th><\/th><\/tr><\/thead>\n<tbody><tr><td>PP<\/td>\n<td>Most chemicals (except acetone and fluorinated\/chlorinated chemicals)<\/td><\/tr>\n<tr><td>PET(g) \/ CPE(+)<\/td>\n<td>Alcohols (EtOH, IPA), water, acids and bases<\/td><\/tr>\n<tr><td>Nylon<\/td>\n<td>IPA, Solvents (acetone, glycerol)<\/td><\/tr>\n<tr><td>ABS<\/td>\n<td>Water, some acids and bases, alcohols<\/td><\/tr>\n<tr><td>TPU<\/td>\n<td>Water (salts), glycol and fuels<\/td><\/tr>\n<tr><td>PC<\/td>\n<td>Water and alcohols<\/td><\/tr>\n<tr><td>PLA \/ Tough PLA<\/td>\n<td>Water<\/td><\/tr>\n<tr><td>PVDF<\/td>\n<td>Solvents (chlorinated, aliphatic, aromatic), strong acids, weak bases, halogens, strong oxidants<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/section>\n<section class=\"article-text\"><p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2214860418303476\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">above table<\/a> refers to general characteristics of the listed material. Chemical resistance strongly depends on the design and formulation of a 3D printed part. A fragile part, for example, will not last long against chemical liquids as a massive print.<\/p>\n<h3>Things to note when using chemical-resistant materials <\/h3>\n<ul><li><p>It\u2019s vital to consider temperature, as most diffusion processes are temperature dependent  <\/p><\/li>\n<li><p>Amorphous thermoplastic polymers, when exposed to chemicals, may crack. This can lead to part failure <\/p><\/li>\n<li><p>When choosing a material, think about the concentration of the chemicals, and the mechanical load <\/p><\/li><\/ul>\n<h2>Our chemical-resistant material partners<\/h2>\n<h3>Arkema <\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/web-staging.ultimaker.com\/materials\/arkema-fluorx\">Arkema FluorX\u2122<\/a> is a tough, semi-crystalline fluoropolymer made from Arkema\u2019s Kynar\u00ae PVDF. It is formulated for printability, and is a great option for parts subjected to demanding conditions, such as solvents, acids, fire, and UV radiation. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Kynar\u00ae PVDF is the material of choice for many harsh\u202fchemical\u202fenvironments,\u201d Steven Serpe,\u202f Market Manager, Specialty Powders and 3D Printing at Arkema, said. &#8220;Fluoropolymers are well known for chemical resistance, but ability of Kynar\u00ae PVDF to be easily processed via many methods including 3D printing makes it stand out in the chemical processing industry for applications like piping, lining, pumps, and other fluid handling equipment.&#8221; <\/p>\n<h3>BASF<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/marketplace.ultimaker.com\/app\/cura\/materials\/rlsijlbing\/BASF_PPGF30_2019\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PP GF30<\/a> contains special glass fibers that are designed for filament making and 3D printing. This will ensure the printed objects are functionally working under certain temperature and mechanical loads.\u202f <\/p>\n<p>\u202f&#8221;Chemical resistance is the degree to which your printed part retains its mechanical properties and shape when it comes in contact with chemicals or solvents. For example, PAHT CF15 has chemical resistance properties against lubricants, whilst ASA shows resistance properties against cleaning agents and Ultrafuse 316L against all organic solvents among others,\u201d Roger Sijlbing, Head of Sales Additive Extrusion Solutions at BASF, said. \u201cIn many cases the chemical resistance is not only a question of material &amp; chemical combination but includes rather application temperatures and dwell time. BASF 3D Forward AM is working on an overview for end-users to assess the chemical resistance of our materials for FFF printing. Currently our chemical experts provide information concerning the chemical resistance of our products on request.\u201d <\/p>\n<h3>DSM<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/web-staging.ultimaker.com\/materials\/dsm-arnitel-id-2045\">Arnitel\u00ae ID 2045<\/a> is a highly flexible TPC (thermoplastic copolyester) that can be used in a broad range of applications.
