Here\u00a0is a run-through of the\u00a0most well-known\u00a0metal printing technologies:\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><b>Direct Metal Laser Sintering (DMLS).<\/b>\u00a0DMLS uses a laser to melt and fuse the metal powder, forming a printed object layer-by-layer on a build-plate. It uses alloys\u00a0(rather than a single type of metal), which are made up of\u00a0metals with different melting points.\u00a0The metals\u00a0fuse as the temperature rises.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><b>Bound Metal Deposition (BMD).<\/b>\u00a0BMD works\u00a0through extrusion, in much the same way as FFF printing. It\u00a0requires\u00a0metal bound in rods of polymer or sacrificial wax, rather than powder. This can then be melted and extruded through the printer&#8217;s nozzle.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><b>Selective Laser Melting (SLM).<\/b>\u00a0Like DMLS,\u00a0SLM also uses a laser and prints the object on a build plate. It only\u00a0requires\u00a0a single metal, however, as it prints at one temperature.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><b>Electron Beam Melting (EBM).<\/b>\u00a0As the name suggests, this printer uses an electron beam to melt the metal, rather than a laser. It\u2019s less commonly used than SLM or DMLS.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><b>Ultrasonic Additive Manufacturing (UAM).\u00a0<\/b>UAM uses room-temperature metal deposition to create 3D printed metal objects. This technology isn\u2019t widely used.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><b>Investment casting.\u00a0<\/b>Although it is not a 3D printing technique,\u00a0investment casting\u00a0uses\u00a0a mold, into which the molten metal is poured. Investment casting allows for a good level of detail, making it appropriate for smaller printed parts.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><b>CNC machining.<\/b>\u00a0All of\u00a0the technologies above are costly \u2013 with some being at a price point that\u2019s too high for SMEs.\u00a0While not a 3D printing technique,\u00a0CNC machining is more affordable, enabling companies to create metal prototypes \u2013 though it does have a few limitations, one being that it is not so effective for\u00a0parts\u00a0that require geometric complexity.<\/p><\/section>\n<div class=\"article-image article-image--2-1 article-content__image\"><div class=\"article-image__container article-image__container--2-1\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"sylatech-metal-\" class=\"img--contain image-contain lazyload c-image-contain article-image__image\" src=\"https:\/\/storage.googleapis.com\/contentful_assets\/images.ctfassets.net\/7cnpidfipnrw\/1C301Bw7ZrMz6IQpIkUkD4\/c911afbad42395fdb2461ec84488414e\/sylatech-metal-\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"article-image__caption\">Sylatech uses Ultimaker 3D printers to speed up its rapid prototyping process for metal production processes<\/div><\/div>\n<section class=\"article-text\"><h2>Types of metals <\/h2>\n<p>When 3D printing\u00a0with metal,\u00a0it\u2019s important to consider\u00a0its\u00a0properties\u00a0\u2013\u00a0and the advantages and disadvantages of each\u00a0type.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3>Aluminum alloys\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/h3>\n<ul><li><p>Pros: Conducts electricity well, has good mechanical properties, low density\u00a0<\/p><\/li>\n<li><p>Cons:\u00a0Isn\u2019t very hard\u00a0<\/p><\/li><\/ul>\n<h3>Cobalt-chrome superalloys\u00a0<\/h3>\n<ul><li><p>Pros:\u00a0Resistant to wear and tear, corrosion-resistant, copes with high temperatures, hard\u00a0<\/p><\/li><\/ul>\n<h3>Inconel (nickel alloys)\u00a0<\/h3>\n<ul><li><p>Pros:\u00a0Good mechanical properties, heat-resistant, can cope with extreme environments\u00a0<\/p><\/li><\/ul>\n<h3>Precious metals (silver, gold etc.)\u00a0<\/h3>\n<ul><li><p>Pros:\u00a0Appearance, suitable for jewelry-making\u00a0<\/p><\/li><\/ul>\n<ul><li><p>Cons:\u00a0Expensive, sometimes difficult to obtain\u00a0<\/p><\/li><\/ul>\n<h3>Stainless steel\u00a0<\/h3>\n<ul><li><p>Pros:\u00a0Resistant to wear and tear, hard, easy to weld\u00a0<\/p><\/li><\/ul>\n<h3>Titanium alloys\u00a0<\/h3>\n<ul><li><p>Pros:\u00a0Good strength-to-weight ratio, resistant to corrosion, doesn\u2019t expand much when exposed to heat\u00a0<\/p><\/li><\/ul>\n<p>3D printing with metal can also take the form of metal filling.\u00a0This means\u00a0metal powder is poured into another material, which makes it heavier. It also gives the printed object a metallic finish.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>Common applications of metal <\/h2>\n<p>The following are\u00a0a\u00a0few ways in which metal 3D printing is used by various industries:\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><b>Aerospace and aviation.\u00a0<\/b>Metal is a valuable material\u00a0in aerospace and aviation.\u00a0It\u00a0can be used to 3D print structural components (often with a titanium alloy). Fuel nozzles can be easily created for specific airplanes, and jet engines can\u00a0potentially\u00a0be constructed out of 3D printed parts.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><b>Engineering.\u00a0<\/b>Metal printed parts are useful for a variety of\u00a0engineering\u00a0applications. They can also be used to replace or repair existing parts, which eradicates the need to wait for a third-party supplier to send a replacement.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><b>Medical.\u00a0<\/b>Medical applications for 3D printing with metal\u00a0include\u00a0prosthetics, replacement hips and knees, hearing aids, and\u00a0shoe\u00a0insoles. Dentists are also using metal 3D printing for fabrication purposes.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><b>Designers.\u00a0<\/b>Jewellery-makers and other designers use metal to create end-use consumer goods, or\u00a0for features on\u00a0shoes or clothing\u00a0(e.g. buckles and fastenings).\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>Hardware requirements\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>When 3D printing with metal, certain hardware criteria\u00a0must be\u00a0met. These are:\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><b>Having an appropriate build-plate \/ bed.\u00a0<\/b>\u00a0The temperature should be between 45\u00b0C and 60\u00b0C. There\u2019s no need for an enclosure.<\/p>\n<p><b>The right surface.\u00a0<\/b>The build surface may require painter\u2019s tape, PEI,\u00a0and a glue-stick.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><b>Appropriate\u00a0extruder.\u00a0<\/b>\u00a0A specialized hardened steel nozzle is required,\u00a0and the temperature should be between 190\u00a0\u00b0C and 220 \u00b0C.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><b>Cooling fan.<\/b>\u00a0A cooling fan is a necessity.<\/p>\n<h2>Choosing your filament\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>When 3D printing with metal, it\u2019s important to\u00a0choose\u00a0the right material for the job. The metals detailed above are suitable for a range of different applications. Alternatively,\u00a0there are some\u00a0instances\u00a0in which\u00a0an alternative material could\u00a0be used. For example:\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul><li><p><a href=\"https:\/\/web-staging.ultimaker.com\/materials\/basf-ultrafuse-316l\">BASF\u00a0Ultrafuse\u00a0316L.<\/a>\u00a0Available on the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/web-staging.ultimaker.com\/learn\/ultimaker-marketplace-more-accessible-than-ever\">Ultimaker\u00a0Marketplace<\/a>, BASF Ultrafuse 316L is a metal-polymer composite.\u00a0It is\u00a0compatible with\u00a0Ultimaker\u2019s\u00a0desktop 3D printers, and\u00a0is\u00a0suitable for\u00a0making\u00a0tools, fixtures, jigs, small-batch parts, and functional components<\/p><\/li><\/ul><\/section>\n<div class=\"article-image article-image--2-1 article-content__image\"><div class=\"article-image__container article-image__container--2-1\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"ultrafuse-\" class=\"img--contain image-contain lazyload c-image-contain article-image__image\" src=\"https:\/\/storage.googleapis.com\/contentful_assets\/images.ctfassets.net\/7cnpidfipnrw\/6Wy53AUT8nP0xqx35iv5we\/5fc06f050f60f061adba7a2e3c51bda5\/ultrafuse-\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"article-image__caption\">A part printed in BASF Ultrafuse 316L<\/div><\/div>\n<section class=\"article-text\"><ul><li><p>DSM\u00a0Arnitel\u00a0ID 2060 HT\u00a0and <a href=\"https:\/\/web-staging.ultimaker.com\/materials\/clariant-pa6-66-gf20-flame-retardant-using-exolit\">Clariant PA6\/66GF 20 FR<\/a>.\u00a0Both\u00a0filaments\u00a0are thermoplastic and able to withstand very high temperatures, just like a metal. They\u00a0also\u00a0offer good wear resistance<\/p><\/li>\n<li><p><a href=\"https:\/\/web-staging.ultimaker.com\/materials\/arkema-fluorx\">Arkema\u00a0FluorX<\/a>\u00a0and DuPont\u00a0Zytel\u00a03D12G30FL BK309.\u00a0These materials make excellent substitutes for stainless steel, as they offer a high level of corrosion resistance. Chemicals\u00a0such as\u00a0solvents, automotive fluids, and cleaning agents don\u2019t result in any deterioration<\/p><\/li>\n<li><p><a href=\"https:\/\/web-staging.ultimaker.com\/materials\/igus-iglidur-i180\">Igus\u00a0Iglidur\u00a0180PF<\/a>.\u00a0This filament is self-lubricating, which makes it highly resistant to wear and tear. It\u2019s suitable for creating parts that are traditionally metal,\u00a0such as\u00a0bearings, toothed wheels, piston rings, and gears<\/p><\/li>\n<li><p><a href=\"https:\/\/web-staging.ultimaker.com\/materials\/owens-corning-xstrand-gf30-pa6\">XSTRAND GF30-PA6<\/a>.\u00a0This filament contains 30% glass fiber, which gives it good chemical resistance,\u00a0high tensile\u00a0strength, and a good operational temperature.\u00a0It is\u00a0well-suited for printing jigs and fixtures<\/p><\/li><\/ul><\/section>\n<div class=\"article-image article-image--2-1 article-content__image\"><div class=\"article-image__container article-image__container--2-1\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"OC XSTRAND GF30-PA6\" class=\"img--contain image-contain lazyload c-image-contain article-image__image\" src=\"https:\/\/storage.googleapis.com\/contentful_assets\/images.ctfassets.net\/7cnpidfipnrw\/53mAkytTqAuiwW8fH9mJtq\/f2eb9cf30f21429db8eff0e0190ce447\/OC_XSTRAND_GF30-PA6.JPG\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"article-image__caption\">A part printed with XSTRAND\u00ae GF30-PA6<\/div><\/div>\n<section class=\"article-text\"><h2>How to print with metal filaments<\/h2>\n<p>If you\u2019re using SLM or DMLS technology, this is how 3D printing with metal works.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><b>Incorporating gas.<\/b>\u00a0Before any printing takes place, the build chamber needs to be filled with an inert gas. This reduces oxidation and enables the chamber to reach an optimum temperature for printing.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><b>Metal powder and scanning.<\/b>\u00a0Metal powder is applied to the build plate, then the laser scans the component\u2019s cross-section. This fuses the metal particles together, thus creating the next layer.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><b>Subsequent layers.<\/b>\u00a0When the first layer is complete, another layer of metal powder\u00a0is applied, and the process is repeated.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Support structures are used to keep the parts attached to the build plate; these help to reduce warping, which may occur in high temperatures. After the printed object is cooled, the excess powder needs to be removed manually, and the object treated.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>With BMD technology, metal is melted within a special extruder, and is deposited on the build plate below, layer by layer.
