Moval: Jigs and fixtures for every occasion with UltiMaker S8

Moval, an Italian manufacturer of custom hot-forged brass components, supplies the hydraulic, automotive, and welding industries across Europe. With 25 employees and full in-house production - from design to CNC machining - efficiency is key to staying competitive.

To cut costs and improve workflow, Moval integrated the UltiMaker S8 3D printer into their operations. With additive manufacturing, Moval’s technical engineer Emanuele Maccarinelli was able to produce jigs and fixtures for a fraction of the price without the long lead times of traditional sourcing.

An end-to-end 3D printing workflow

Emanuele and his team rely on the full UltiMaker ecosystem whenever a new application arises. From slicing designs in UltiMaker Cura to storing digital files and managing print queues through UltiMaker Digital Factory, every step happens within the same streamlined workflow.

With a wide range of application needs, Emanuele has gained experience printing with a diverse selection of filaments. Combined with the design freedom of additive manufacturing, this has enabled Moval to produce everything from gauges and jigs to functional tools.

With 3D printing, we could follow exactly the shape of the part that we want.

This gauge is designed to verify the dimensional accuracy of a part by inserting it into the 3D printed fixture. Printed in green PLA, Emanuele was able to customize it by designing size indicators directly on the gauge.

With the new S8 printer, the print resulted in an improved surface finish with no post-print processing needed. Thanks to the UltiMaker Cheetah motion planner, the gauge took 1h 49 minutes to produce, compared to the previous print time of 6 hours and 34 minutes.

Another small yet impactful application of additive manufacturing has been the production of gasket covers for air pistons. By using UltiMaker S8 and TPU 95A he was able to create a precise fit that offers improved sealing and protection.

Printed with the S8 on blue PET CF, this jig is in constant contact with machinery, so choosing a wear-resistant material was crucial.
